Excellence in First Nations Telemedicine Workshop
Delegates from across Canada attended the first "Excellence in First Nations Telemedicine Workshop" in Sioux Lookout, Ontario on March 24-26, 2009. KO Telemedicine offered an intensive three day "First Nations Telehealth 101" for First Nations leadership, health directors, Telemedicine stakeholders, and government representatives.
KO Telemedicine shared their success stories and expertise. The first day covered the history and background of KO Telemedicine and K-Net along with a demonstration of the telemedicine equipment by Darlene Panacheese, Community Telemedicine Coordinator, connecting live via videoconference from Mishkeegogamang First Nation. Other areas of discussion involved Community Engagement and Consultation, and Education and Capacity Building.
The second day covered Clinical Best Practices under Teleopthalmology, Telehomecare, Telerehab, Telemental Health, Telepharmacy, and Telediabetes, as well as Privacy Considerations for First Nations Telemedicine. The day ended with a detailed breakdown of the partnerships and agreements that KOTM has with its partner organizations.
The information provided to the participants would assist them to develop strategies and best practices that can be adapted to any project across the country. It provided great networking opportunities for participants, as well as allowing participants to take part in group discussions. The group trip to Lac Seul First Nations for a traditional native dinner was a highlight for many attendees.
The workshop was a huge success and KO Telemedicine plans to make this an annual event.
